According to a recent article forwarded to me by the Alzheimer’s Association, unpublished studies that were presented at the annual meeting of The Menopause Society found that “intense hot flashes are associated with an increase in C-reactive protein” (a marker of future heart disease) “and to a blood marker that might predict a later diagnosis of Alzheimer’s Disease.”
Dr. Stephanie Faubion, Director of the Mayo Clinic’s Women’s Health Specialty Clinic in Florida and the medical director for The Menopause Society, states: “This is another piece of evidence telling us that hot flashes and night sweats may not be as benign” as previously thought.
There are many triggers and other risk factors associated with heart disease and memory loss. It is prudent to discuss available therapies and life-style changes with your doctor (even before menopause symptoms are experienced) to prevent or protect you from future health issues.
