WHAT DOES “GYNECOCRACY” HAVE TO DO WITH MENOPAUSE?

Here’s your word for the day:  Gynecocracy.  It means a government or society ruled by women.  According to Merriam-Webster, Gynecocracy’s first known use was in 1612 and is derived from Greek. I came across this word while watching the Mad Men series in which it was used disparagingly (no surprise there).

Granted, our current forms of government are not totally “ruled” by women — unless you agree with the adages that “women are the power behind the throne” or “behind every successful man there stands a woman.” However, in each of our own small worlds, whether you are a C.E.O. or a mother, we do have the power to affect our menopause destiny.  We just have to learn to practice gynecocracy!

Some tips:

#1: Do your homework before you hit your 40s so that you can be prepared when the first menopause symptoms arise.  Yes, women have experienced menopause in their 30s!!

#2: Talk with your doctor to determine what medications, products and procedures are available to you once symptoms begin occurring.  Have a plan!

#3: Do not hesitate to question your doctor about solutions that have been prescribed for you, especially if you are experiencing problems.

#4: Find another doctor if you are not satisfied with your current one.

Remember, stay in tune with your body. You are your best advocate, and you “rule” your healthcare world!
