TIME FOR MENOPAUSE SUPPORT LEGISLATION?

The reason I started this blog, The Atrophied Vagina Club, is that no one, not even my OBGYN, ever discussed menopause with me! Seems like it might be a good idea to finally address the second bullet point in this article.

“Currently, menopause-related legislation is being considered or has been recently enacted in at least 15 US states. These bills address various aspects of menopause care and support, including:

  • Insurance Coverage: Several states are considering bills to mandate insurance coverage for menopause evaluation and treatment options. Illinois and Louisiana have already passed laws requiring insurance coverage for some or all menopause treatments.
  • Clinician Training: Bills in California and New Jersey aim to improve menopause education and training for healthcare providers. This includes potential requirements for continuing medical education on menopause for license renewal.
  • Workplace Protections: Rhode Island recently enacted the first state law providing workplace protections for menopausal women. Legislation in New York and New Jersey also aims to prevent discrimination and require accommodations for employees experiencing menopause symptoms, such as remote work or paid leave.
  • Awareness and Education: Bills in states like Illinois and Nevada focus on raising public awareness about menopause, for example, by designating a Menopause Awareness Week or Month.

It’s important to note that the scope and status of these bills vary by state. Some bills have been introduced but are still in committee, while others have passed in some capacity or are awaiting a governor’s signature.

The current movement to address menopause through legislation represents a significant shift towards recognizing and addressing the needs of women in this stage of life.”

  1. A brilliant exposé of something that is rarely considered.

If there is some general physiological condition that can impact workplace efficiency, there should be accommodations made, as there are for people with other physical disabilities. It’s not as though menopause is an isolated incident; basically every woman on Earth who makes it to that age will be impacted, and that impact will occur far before a woman’s working age is over.

I hope the impact of this will be considered across the country.

  2. Yes, and many menopausal symptoms (like vaginal atrophy or bones loss) continue throughout the remainder of a woman’s life.
